Bagatelle Records X The Academy

Bagatelle Records is a little gem in Long Beach, CA just three blocks away from The Academy.  This tee-shirt is sort of a secret handshake or like one of those Illuminati badges you see on the backs of cars.  ”Yeah me, too.”

Generic Surplus at The Academy

Generic Surplus is a new sneaker brand that was founded by the same team that brought us The Generic Man and Generic Costume. Adhering to strong, simple and definitive silhouettes, Generic Surplus’ designs rely on the notion that less is more. The styles range from takes on the classic utilitarianism of a military hi-top to a casual leisurely, boat shoe and plimsole. A recent collaboration between Generic Surplus and the Ace Hotel confirms the recreation of their plimsole with a design being commissioned that draws upon a summer day by the Ace Hotel.

The Generic Surplus brand still draws heavily upon its parent company’s emphasis on the simple. With a conscious lack of branding, the designers behind Generic Surplus instead focus their energy on classic American design. Made in Korea, Generic Surplus offers quality construction and a sturdiness that attests to its manufacturing group’s former life as a skateboarding shoe factory.

Generic Surplus was launched in the Fall of 2008 and the line is quickly gaining recognition for their memorable, thoughtful designs. Generic Surplus is now available at The Academy at our Long Beach location and online soon! Here’s a peak at some of the styles and shots from the Generic Surplus manufacturing line.

Architects, Long Beach City Hall & Habitat 67

Here is how our all at once beloved and beleaguered City Hall was envisioned by the architect firm Stricker recently after its opening.  Also, totally related/unrelated is Habitat from Expo 67. I suppose they both evoke the same distant sense of resolve that geometric and brutally bare buildings tend to. I imagine that it could be that nostalgic tinge the photos radiate as well… Habitat was actually designed so that every unit would have its own garden and an equally decent amount of sunlight at various points of the day. Please direct me to better versions of photos of City Hall if you’re in the loop.

Also, let City Council know you don’t want to see it go. They are seriously talking about tearing the thing down.  A sequal to Lowenthal 451?
